Who we are

Quantum Research Centre (QRC) is a new international centre of excellence for research into quantum technologies. Led by a globally recognised expert in the field, Professor Jose Ignacio Latorre, we are dedicated to building the first quantum computer in the region.

At QRC, we are inspired by our vision of quantum technologies that recognises the numerous positive applications our work can have in industries and scientific disciplines far beyond our core areas of focus.

QRC is part of the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a UAE-based research centre that aims to lead global advances in artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics, quantum computing, cryptography and quantum communications, directed energy, secure communication, smart devices, advanced materials, and propulsion and space technologies.

We belong to the Abu Dhabi Government’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), which oversees technology research in the emirate.

What we do

At QRC, we are developing a new generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum communications and quantum sensing. We conduct basic research and partner with other scientific institutions to pioneer new projects.

The focus of our research is threefold: pursuing a full-stack approach to quantum computation based on superconducting circuits, crafting ultra-precise quantum sensors that exploit the levitation properties of microscopic objects, and designing entanglement distribution for quantum communication.

The research spirit of the centre is complemented by a strong interest in applications such as quantum algorithms for artificial intelligence and drug discovery, a new generation of navigation devices, and real-life quantum cryptographic solutions.

Today, our work focuses on:

Our team

At QRC, we are bringing together a team of the sharpest minds from across the global quantum community to investigate the toughest questions and respond to critical challenges – while always following strict ethical principles.

Prof. Dr José Ignacio Latorre

Chief Researcher
Quantum Research Centre

Prof. Dr José Ignacio Latorre is the Chief Researcher of the Quantum Centre at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a cutting-edge UAE-based scientific research centre. In this role, he is helping both to construct the first quantum computer in the region and to develop a new generation of quantum technologies.

A Full Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Barcelona (on leave), Prof Latorre is a founder of Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual, an institution that fosters high-level international scientific events. He also was a founder of the NNPDF collaboration, which develops artificial intelligence technology for the treatment of all data coming from the high-energy physics laboratory LHC, at CERN.

Prof. Dr Latorre has written over 130 research papers in international journals on particle physics and quantum information, and has directed 13 PhD theses. He has produced two documentaries; one of them, ‘That’s the Story’, covers the life of Nobel Laureate and last living scientist from the Manhattan Project Professor Roy J. Glauber. He has written three books on quantum mechanics and the ethics of artificial intelligence. He has curated large exhibitions and given many scientific outreach talks.

Prof. Dr Latorre has been involved in a number of start-ups, and a spinoff from the University of Barcelona. He also is an advisor to national research agencies.

Prof. Dr Latorre obtained his PhD in Particle Physics from the University of Barcelona. In addition, he was a Fulbright Fellow at MIT (Boston) and did his postdoctoral research at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. He has spent extended research time at CQT (Singapore), CERN (Geneva), Nikhef (Amsterdam) and MIT.
